On September 17, 1970, Luis Melendez (Cedar Rapids Cardinals – 1968) went 4-6 at the plate with two RBI and scored a pair of runs as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Chicago Cubs 9-2.
Luis Melendez hit .248 with 9 HR and 122 RBI during his 8 year career with the Cardinals and Padres. He managed in the Cardinals and Phillies minor league systems following his MLB playing career.
Luis Melendez was a member of the 1968 Cedar Rapids Cardinals team that finished 63-53 under manager Jack Krol. Melendez hit .274 with 6 HR, 19 doubles and 120 hits in 113 games for the Cedar Rapids Cardinals.
