More Cedar Rapids Alumni Minor League signings

Sprouting News LogoThis morning’s Sean O’Sullivan (2007) to the Padres post made me realize that I had been tweeting a lot of the minor league free agent signings, but I had not been updating them here on the blog. Here is the most updated list to the best of my knowledge.

David HerndonDavid Herndon (2007) was claimed off waivers twice this off season and then was designated for assignment by the Yankees to accompany additional roster moves. Herndon then chose to sign a minor league deal with the Yankees. He posted a 2-8 record with a 3.85 E.R.A. in 97 games for the Phillies between 2010 and 2012 appearing in just five games this season before the injury shut him down.

David Herndon posted a 13-8 record with a 4.02 E.R.A. with two complete games in 25 appearances for Cedar Rapids in 2007. Herndon struck out 83 batters in 152 1/3 innings of work. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 78-61 record under manager Ever Magallanes. The Kernels lost to the Clinton Lumberkings in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.

Darwin PerezDarwin Perez (2009) signed a minor league deal with the Oakland Athletics after spending seven seasons in the Angels organization. Perez hit .214 with 6 HR and 36 RBI in 126 games for the Arkansas Travelers in 2012. He won the Rawlings MiLB Gold Glove at second base in 2011.

Darwin Perez hit .261 with 2 HR, 42 RBI and stole 11 bases in 106 games for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2009. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 78-60 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels topped Peoria in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs before falling to Burlington in the semifinals.

Trevor RecklingTrevor Reckling (2008) has signed a minor league deal to join the Chicago White Sox organization. Reckling pitched in the Angels organization for six seasons. He appeared in just four games for the Inland Empire 66ers in 2012. Reckling pitched in the 2009 Futures Game for team USA and reached as high as Triple-A pitching for the Salt Lake Bees in 2010 at the age of 21.

Trevor Reckling posted a 10-7 record with a 3.37 E.R.A. with one complete game in 26 starts for Cedar Rapids in 2008. Reckling struck out 128 batters in 152 1/3 innings of work and was selected to play in the Midwest League All-Star game. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 72-66 record under manager Keith Johnson. The Kernels topped Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs before falling to Burlington in the semifinals.

Alberto Rosario (2008) signed a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox. Rosario caught within the Angels organization for the last seven seasons. He split time playing for the Arkansas Travelers and the Salt Lake Bees in 2012.

Alberto Rosario hit .239 in 14 games for the 2008 Cedar Rapids Kernels squad before being promoted to play for the the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

Hainley StatiaHainley Statia (2006) re-signed with the Milwaukee Brewers agreeing to a minor league contract. Statia split time playing for the Huntsville Stars and the Nashville Sounds in 2012.

Hainley Statia hit .297 with 31 doubles, 1 HR, 38 RBI and stole 23 bases for the 2006 Kernels squad. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 65-74 record under manager Bobby Magallanes.

Rich Thompson (2003) signed a minor league deal with the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this week. Thompson has compiled a 3-4 record with a 4.21 E.R.A. in six MLB seasons playing for the Angels and Athletics. He has struck out 105 batters in 104 2/3 innings of work in 82 games.

Rich ThompsonRich Thompson posted a 1-2 record with a miniscule 0.24 E.R.A. and 9 saves in 31 games for the 2003 Cedar Rapids Kernels. The team finished in 10th place at 66-72 under manager Todd Claus. Thompson played in the 2007 Futures game representing Australia on the World team.

Brandon Wood (2004) signed a minor league deal with the Kansas City Royals. Wood had spent the 2012 season playing for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Rockies Triple-A) where he hit .259 with 10 HR and 64 RBI in 119 games. Brandon Wood has hit .186 with 18 HR and 64 RBI during his five MLB seasons playing for the Angels and Pirates.

Brandon WoodBrandon Wood was a member of the 2004 Cedar Rapids Kernels team that finished with a record of 75-64 under manager Bobby Magallanes. The Kernels lost in the 1st round of the Midwest League playoffs to the Clinton Lumbkerkings. Wood hit .251 with 11 HR, 30 doubles, 64 RBI and stole 21 bases in 125 games for the Kernels. He won the Midwest League HR Derby at the 2004 MWL All-Star game hosted in Cedar Rapids.

This date in Kernels history – September 8, 2010 – Jose Jimenez

On September 8, 2010, Jose Jimenez went 2-3 at the plate with a HR, two RBI, a walk and scored a run as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Clinton Lumberkings 3-2 in game one of the best-of-three opening round of the Midwest League playoffs. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.

Jose Jimenez hit .245 with 15 doubles, 7 HR, 42 RBI and stole 50 bases in 88 games during the 2010 season for the Kernels. Jimenez hit .248 with 6 doubles, 3 HR and 14 RBI in 62 games playing for the Inland Empire 66ers in 2012.

This date in Kernels history – September 2, 2010 – Jean Segura

On September 2, 2010, Jean Segura went 3-4 at the plate with a HR, a RBI and scored a pair of runs as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Burlington Bees 4-1. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.

Jean Segura hit .313 with 24 doubles, 12 triples, 10 HR, 79 RBI and stole 50 bases in 130 games during the 2010 season for the Kernels. Segura was selected to play in the Midwest League All-Star game. He appeared in the 2012 Futures Game along with former Kernels Ariel Pena (2010) and Tyler Skaggs (2010) during the MLB All-Star festivities. Jean Segura hit .293 with 12 doubles, 4 HR, 26 RBI and stole 18 bases playing for the Tempe Angels and the Inland Empire 66ers in 2011. Segura hit .294 with 10 doubles, 7 HR, 40 RBI and stole 33 bases for the Arkansas Travelers in 93 games in 2012 before making his MLB debut on July 24, 2012.

The Milwaukee Brewers traded Zach Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels to acquire three former Kernels who were each were highly touted Angels prospects on July 27, 2012. Jean Segura, Johnny Hellweg and Ariel Pena (2010) were each included in the deal. Segura hit .433 with three doubles, four RBI and stole four bases for the Huntsville Stars before earning a promotion to join the Brewers. He has hit .200 with a triple, seven RBI and has stole three bases in 20 games with Milwaukee.

This date in Kernels history – August 29, 2010 – Randal Grichuk

On August 29, 2010,  Randal Grichuk went 2-4 at the plate with a HR, two RBI and scored a pair of runs as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-2. Randal Grichuk hit .292 with 19 doubles, 7 HR and 36 RBI in 52 games during the 2010 season for the Kernels. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs. Grichuk returned to play in 32 games for the 2011 Kernels squad hitting .230 with 2 HR and 13 RBI. Cedar Rapids finished the 2011 season with a 61-78 record under manager Brent Del Chiaro.

Randal Grichuk hit .283 with 4 doubles, 1 HR and 6 RBI for the Inland Empire 66ers (Hi-A) in 14 games after being promoted in 2011. Grichuk is hitting .290 with 27 doubles, 9 triples, 17 HR and 66 RBI for the Inland Empire 66ers in 2012.

This date in Kernels history – August 13, 2010 – Jean Segura / Johnny Hellweg

On August 13, 2010, Jean Segura went 2-4 at the plate with his eighth HR of the season lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 6-3 victory over the Kane County Cougars. Johnny Hellweg worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 15th save of the season. Hellweg struck out three while allowing two walks. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.

Johnny Hellweg pitched five games for the Kernels at the end of the 2009 season posting a 0-0 record with a 1.35 E.R.A. and 2 saves. Hellweg returned in 2010 and went 2-4 with a 4.33 E.R.A. in 41 games finishing 36 games for 16 saves. He converted to the starting rotation with the Inland Empire 66ers last year posting a 6-4 record with a 3.73 E.R.A. in 28 games including 14 starts. Hellweg compiled a 5-10 record in 2012 for the Arkansas Travelers with a 3.38 E.R.A. in 21 starts. He struck out 88 batters in 119 2/3 innings of work.

This date in Kernels history – August 12, 2011 – Travis Witherspoon

On August 12, 2011,  Travis Witherspoon led off the game with a home run and went 2-3 and scored a pair of runs to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 2-1 win against the Clinton Lumberkings. Travis Witherspoon hit .245 with 12 HR, 42 RBI and stole 44 bases in 102 games during the 2011 season for the Kernels. Witherspoon was selected to the 2011 Midwest League All-Star game squad where he won the Home Run Derby. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 61-78 record under manager Brent Del Chiaro.

Travis Witherspoon hit .279 with 4 doubles, 1 HR and 10 RBI for the Inland Empire 66ers (Hi-A) in 16 games after his promotion in 2011. Witherspoon started the started the 2012 season back with the 66ers where he hit .319 with 10 doubles, 5 triple, 7 HR, 27 RBI and stole 25 bases in 67 games before earning a promotion to Arkansas (AA). He has hit .238 with 9 doubles, 2 triples, 5 HR and 15 RBI in 32 games for the Travelers

This date in Kernels history – August 1, 2010 – Randal Grichuk

Randal Grichuk hit .292 with 19 doubles, 7 HR and 36 RBI in 52 games during the 2010 season for the Kernels. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs. Grichuk returned to play in 32 games for the 2011 Kernels squad hitting .230 with 2 HR and 13 RBI. Cedar Rapids finished the 2011 season with a 61-78 record under manager Brent Del Chiaro.

On July 25, 2010,  Carlos Ramirez went 2-3 at the plate with a pair of HR, three RBI and walked as the Kernels defeated the Bowling Green Hot Rods 7-2. Carlos Ramirez hit .226 with 9 doubles, 9 HR and 34 RBI in 77 games during the 2010 season for the Kernels. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs. Carlos Ramirez returned to play in 31 games for the 2011 Kernels squad hitting.259 with 3 HR and 12 RBI. Cedar Rapids finished the 2011 season with a 61-78 record under manager Brent Del Chiaro.

Carlos Ramirez hit .348 with 21 doubles, 4 HR and 28 RBI for the Inland Empire 66ers (Hi-A) in 52 games and played in four game for the Arkansas Travelers (AA) after being promoted in 2011. Ramirez is hitting .223 with six doubles, two HR and 16 RBI in 57 games for the Arkansas Travelers in 2012.

This date in Kernels history – July 22, 2010 – Casey Haerther

On July 22, 2010, Casey Haerther went 1-2 at the plate with his sixth HR, two RBI, scored a run and walked as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Dayton Dragons 8-1 on the road. Haerther hit .307 with 26 doubles, 8 HR, 74 RBI and stole 10 bases in 113 games during the 2010 season for the Kernels. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.

Casey Haerther hit .293 with 34 doubles, 8 HR and 68 RBI for the Inland Empire 66ers in 117 games in 2011. Haerther is hitting .272 with 8 HR and 39 RBI in 88 games for the Arkansas Travelers in 2012.

This date in Kernels history – July 2, 2007 – Jeremy Haynes

On July 2, 2007, Jeremy haynes pitched seven shutout innings to earn the win as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Kane County Cougars 5-0. Haynes struck out two while allowing four hits in the game.

Jeremy Haynes went 5-6 with a 3.06 E.R.A. in 19 starts for Cedar Rapids in 2007. Haynes struck out 75 batters in 94 innings of work. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 78-61 record under manager Ever Magallanes. The Kernels lost to the Clinton Lumberkings in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs. Jeremy Haynes also appeared in 5 games for the Kernels in 2008 posting a 2-1 record with a 2.67 E.R.A.

Jeremy Haynes split the 2011 season between the Inland Empire 66ers (Hi-A – LAA) and the Lynchburg Hillcats (Hi-A – ATL). Haynes had a 1-2 record with a 9.39 E.R.A. in four games for Inland Empire and posted a 2-1 mark with a 6.41 E.R.A. in 30 games for Lynchburg in 2011. The Atlanta Braves released Haynes during Spring Training this year.
