This date in Kernels alumni history – August 1, 1972

On August 1, 1972, Nate Colbert (Cedar Rapids Cardinals – 1965) went 3-4 at the plate with 3 HR, 8 RBI a walk and scored four runs as the San Diego Padres defeated the Atlanta Braves 11-7.

Nate Colbert hit .243 with 173 HR and 520 RBI during his 10 year MLB career playing for the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, Detroit Tigers, Montreal Expos and the Oakland Athletics. Colbert was selected to the N.L. All-Star squads in 1971, 1972 and 1973.

Nate Colbert was part of the 1965 Cedar Rapids Cardinals squad that finished in 3rd place with a record of 62-52 under manager Ron Plaza. Colbert hit .274 with 9 HR in 81 games for Cedar Rapids.
