This date in Kernels history – April 4, 2008 – Tyler Johnson
This will be my 8th season (2005-present) working as the stadium operations guy here with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. I will be reminiscing the best performances by the Kernels during my tenure to add to my This Date in Kernels Alumni History features this year. Its not quite the best in Kernels history as the team became the Kernels in 1993 as we started our affiliation with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, but it is a start and research is never truly complete anyway.
On April 4, 2008, Tyler Johnson was 2-4 at the plate with a HR, two RBI and scored a pair of runs as the Kernels defeated the Clinton Lumberkings 10-6.
Tyler Johnson hit .223 with 9 HR, 19 doubles, 24 stolen bases and 40 RBI during the 2008 season for the Kernels. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 72-66 record under manager Keith Johnson. The Kernels topped Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs before falling to Burlington in the semifinals. Johnson also played for the 2006 and 2007 Kernels squads.
Tyler Johnson played in nine games as a sophomore for the Oklahoma State Cowboys football team in 2011 before missing the final four games due to injury. Johnson tallied 29 tackles including 22 solo stops. He had a season high seven tackles including a sack and a tackle for loss in his season debut against Kansas. (The Associated Press Photo)
