This date in Kernels history – April 11, 2008 – Jordan Walden
This is my 8th season (2005-present) working as the stadium operations guy here with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. I will be reminiscing the best performances by the Kernels during my tenure to add to my This Date in Kernels Alumni History features this year.
On April 11, 2008, Jordan Walden earned his first win of the season pitching six shutout innings as the Kernels defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 1-0. Walden struck out six while allowing two hits and a walk in the victory.
Jordan Walden posted a 4-6 record and a 2.18 E.R.A. in 18 starts for Cedar Rapids in 2008. Walden struck out 91 batters in 107 1/3 innings of work. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 72-66 record under manager Keith Johnson. The Kernels topped Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs before falling to Burlington in the semifinals.
Jordan Walden made the American League All-Star squad and finished seventh in the Rookie of the Year voting in 2011. Walden posted a 5-5 record and a 2.98 E.R.A. in 62 appearances for the Los Angeles Angels. He struck out 67 batters in 60 1/3 innings of work earning 32 saves as the Angels closer.
