This date in Kernels history – May 3, 2011 – Travis Witherspoon
On May 3, 2011, Travis Witherspoon went 4-7 at the plate including a RBI single in the bottom of the 17th inning that gave the Kernels a 4-3 walk off extra inning comeback victory over the Burlington Bees. Travis Witherspoon hit .245 with 12 HR, 42 RBI and stole 44 bases in 102 games during the 2011 season for the Kernels. Witherspoon was selected to the 2011 Midwest League All-Star game squad where he won the Home Run Derby. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 61-78 record under manager Brent Del Chiaro.
Travis Witherspoon hit .279 with 4 doubles, 1 HR and 10 RBI for the Inland Empire 66ers (Hi-A) in 16 games after his promotion in 2011. Witherspoon has started the 2012 season back with the 66ers.
This is my 8th season (2005-present) working as the stadium operations guy here with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. I will be reminiscing the best performances by the Kernels during my tenure to add to my This Date in Kernels Alumni History features this year.
