Padres acquire Alexi Amarista (2008-09) and Donn Roach (2011) from Angels
The San Diego Padres traded reliever Ernesto Frieri to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Thursday to acquire 2009 Midwest League batting champion Alexi Amarista (2008-09) and Donn Roach (2011) who was the Angels 3rd round pick in the 2010 draft.
Alexi Amarista played just one game for Cedar Rapids in 2008, but returned in 2009 where he hit .319 with 39 doubles, 10 triples, 4 HR, 49 RBI and stole 38 bases as he claimed the Midwest League Batting title and was selected to to mid-season All-Star game squad. The 2009 Kernels squad finished with a 78-60 record under manager Bill Mosiello defeating the Peoria Chiefs in the opening round of the playoffs before losing in the semifinals to the Burlington Bees. Amarista made his major league debut on April 26, 2011 and hit .154 in 23 games for the Angels last year.
Donn Roach posted a 5-5 record with 2 saves and a 3.45 E.R.A. in 45 games for the 2011 Kernels squad. Roach struck out 68 batters in 70 1/3 innings of work. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 61-78 record under manager Brent Del Chiaro.
