This date in Kernels history – June 26, 2007 – Matt Sweeney
On June 26, 2007, Matt Sweeney went 3-4 at the plate with a HR, two RBI and scored a pair of runs as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Beloit Snappers 8-4. Matt Sweeney hit .260 with 29 doubles, 18 HR and 72 RBI in 119 games during the 2007 season for the Kernels. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 78-61 record under manager Ever Magallanes. The Kernels lost to the Clinton Lumberkings in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.
Matt Sweeney was acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays along with Sean Rodriguez (2004-05) and Alex Torres from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for Scott Kazmir. Sweeney hit .154 with 7 HR and 29 RBI in 82 games playing for the Montgomery Biscuits last season.
Matt Sweeney was selected in the AA phase of the 2012 Rule V Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. He is hitting .250 with 2 HR and 13 RBI in 33 games for the Frederick Keys (Hi-A) in 2012.
