Tyler Skaggs (2010) and Ariel Pena (2010) added to MLB Futures Game rosters
Tyler Skaggs (2010) and Ariel Pena (2010) have been added to the 2012 MLB Futures Game to replace Trevor Bauer and Edwar Cabrera at the game. They are the 21st and 22nd selections of former Kernels to play in the event held during the Major League All-Star game. Skaggs started the Futures Game last year representing the U.S. team and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Pena joins Jean Segura (2010) on the 2012 World team and is the 18th different Kernels alumni to be selected to play in the game.
Tyler Skaggs posted a 8-4 record with a 3.61 E.R.A. in 19 games for Cedar Rapids in 2010. Skaggs struck out 82 batters in 82 1/3 innings of work. Ariel Pena went 7-5 with a 3.76 E.R.A. in 18 starts for the Kernels. Pena struck out 88 batters in 103 innings of work. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.
Tyler Skaggs was acquired by the Diamondbacks along with Joe Saunders (2002), Patrick Corbin (2010) and Rafael Rodriguez (2003-05) in exchange for Dan Haren on July 25, 2010. He has compiled a 5-4 record with a 2.84 E.R.A. in 13 starts for Mobile (AA) this season. Skaggs has struck out 71 in 69 2/3 innings of work.
Ariel Pena has compiled a 5-4 record with a 2.94 E.R.A. for the Arkansas Travelers (AA) in 2012. Pena has struck out 86 in 88 2/3 innings of work.
