This date in Kernels history – July 1, 2006 – Tommy Mendoza
On July 1, 2006, Tommy Mendoza worked eight innings while allowing one unearned run to earn the win and improve to 5-5 as the Kernels defeated the Dayton Dragons 7-2. Mendoza struck out four while allowing three hits in the game.
Tommy Mendoza went 11-6 with a 4.17 E.R.A. in 27 starts for Cedar Rapids in 2006. Mendoza struck out 134 batters in 170 2/3 innings of work. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 65-74 record under manager Bobby Magallanes. Tommy Mendoza also appeared in 12 games for the Kernels in 2007 posting a 2-4 record with a 4.86 E.R.A.
Tommy Mendoza last pitched in the Angels organization in 2010 in Salt Lake (AAA). He pitched the 2011 season for the Joliet Slammers in the Frontier League. Mendoza has a 3-3 record with a 4.75 E.R.A. in nine starts for Joliet in 2012. He has another Kernels alum joining him on this years Slammers roster. Abel Nieves (2007) is leading the team and is in third in the Frontier League with a batting average at .348. Nieves has 3 HR and 18 RBI in 37 games. Follow them at http://jolietslammers.com/.
