This date in Kernels history – July 4, 2007 – Mark Trumbo
On July 4, 2007, Mark Trumbo hit a three run HR in the first inning to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 13-5 victory over the Beloit Snappers. Mark Trumbo hit .272 with 27 doubles, 14 HR and 76 RBI in 128 games during the 2007 season for the Kernels. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 78-61 record under manager Ever Magallanes. The Kernels lost to the Clinton Lumberkings in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs. Trumbo hit .220 with 13 HR and 59 RBI for the 2006 Kernels squad which finished 65-74 under manager Bobby Magallanes.
Mark Trumbo finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting to Jeremy Hellickson of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011. Trumbo collected five first place votes and finished with 63 points compared to Hellickson’s 17 first place votes and 102 points. Trumbo led the Angels in HR and RBI. He finished the year hitting .254 with 29 HR and 87 RBI.
Mark Trumbo earned his first American League All-Star appearance in 2012. Trumbo is hitting .304 with 15 doubles, 20 HR (7th in the A.L.) and 55 RBI (7th in the A.L.) in 72 games for the Angels this season. Trumbo’s .959 OPS is currently the fifth highest in the American League.
