This date in Kernels history – July 5, 2010 – Mike Trout
Mike Trout hit .267 in 5 games for the 2009 Kernels squad late in the season. Trout returned to Cedar Rapids in 2010 where he hit .362 with 19 doubles,7 triples, 6 HR, 39 RBI and stole 45 bases in 81 games. He was named to the 2010 Midwest League All-Star game, played in the XM Futures Game in Anaheim and swept Midwest League post season awards winning the 2010 MWL batting title, MWL Player of the Year award and MWL Prospect of the year award. Trout became the youngest recipient of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award as the Topps Minor League Player of the Year in 2010. He earned Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year Award in 2011. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.
Mike Trout hit .326 with 18 doubles, 13 triples, 11 HR, 38 RBI and stole 33 bases for the Arkansas Travelers in 91 games in 2011. Trout made his MLB debut on July 8, 2011 and hit .220 with 6 doubles, 5 HR, 16 RBI and stole 4 bases in 40 games for the Angels in 2011. He began the 2012 season with the Salt Lake Bees before rejoining the Angels. Trout has earned a spot on the American League All-Star squad in 2012. He is leading the league with a .343 batting average and 23 stolen bases in 60 games for the Angels. Trout has 15 doubles, three triples, 10 HR, 36 RBI and has scored 52 runs (10th in the A.L.) since his promotion. His .399 OBP is the is the fourth best in the American League and his .950 OPS is the 7th highest.

This is my 8th season (2005-present) working as the stadium operations guy here with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. I will be reminiscing the best performances by the Kernels during my tenure to add to my This Date in Kernels Alumni History features this year.
