This date in Kernels history – July 14, 2011 – Ricky Alvarez
On July 14, 2011, Ricky Alvarez went 3-4 at the plate with a double, a HR, two RBI and scored a pair of runs as the Kernels defeated the Bowling Green Hot Rods 8-2. Ricky Alvarez appeared in six games for Cedar Rapids in 2010 hitting .294 with 3 RBI in 17 at bats. Alvarez returned in 2011 to hit .257 with 31 doubles, 10 HR and 57 RBI in 124 games for the Kernels. Cedar Rapids finished the 2011 season with a 61-78 record under manager Brent Del Chiaro.
Ricky Alvarez was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the Rule V draft this past off season. The Cubs then traded him to the Monterrey (AAA) team in Mexico for cash considerations. Alvarez has hit .277 with five doubles, five HR and 27 RBI in 52 games for the Sultanes de Monterrey in 2012.
