This date in Kernels history – August 9, 2009 – Alexi Amarista (2008-09)
On August 9, 2009, Alexi Amarista was 3-5 at the plate with a double, a HR, two RBI, scored a pair of runs and stole his 32nd base of the season as the Cedar Rapids Kernels fell to the Beloit Snappers 9-7. Alexi Amarista played just one game for Cedar Rapids in 2008, but returned in 2009 where he hit .319 with 39 doubles, 10 triples, 4 HR, 49 RBI and stole 38 bases as he claimed the Midwest League Batting title and was selected to to mid-season All-Star game squad. The 2009 Kernels squad finished with a 78-60 record under manager Bill Mosiello defeating the Peoria Chiefs in the opening round of the playoffs before losing in the semifinals to the Burlington Bees. Amarista made his major league debut on April 26, 2011 and hit .154 in 23 games for the Angels last year.
The San Diego Padres traded reliever Ernesto Frieri to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim earlier this season to acquire 2009 Alexi Amarista (2008-09) and Donn Roach (2011) who was the Angels 3rd round pick in the 2010 draft. Amarista is hitting .270 with 11 doubles, 4 HR and 23 RBI in 65 games for the Padres since the trade.
This is my 8th season (2005-present) working as the stadium operations guy here with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. I will be reminiscing the best performances by the Kernels during my tenure to add to my This Date in Kernels Alumni History features this year.
