This date in Kernels history – August 17, 2008 – Clay Fuller

On August 17, 2008, Clay Fuller hit a walk off HR in the bottom of the 13th to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 5-4 win over the Beloit Snappers at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Fuller finished the game 2-4 at the plate with a walk, a double, a HR, two RBI and scored a run. Clay Fuller hit .260 with 19 doubles, 13 triples, 9 HR, 36 stolen bases and 47 RBI in 125 games during the 2008 season for the Kernels. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 72-66 record under manager Keith Johnson. The Kernels topped Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs before falling to Burlington in the semifinals.

Clay Fuller played six seasons in the Angels minor league system before retiring after playing for the Arkansas Travelers during the 2011 season. Fuller hit .249 with 8 HR and 34 RBI in 85 games before enrolling at Baylor University to walk on the football team. As a true freshman in 2011, Fuller played in all 13 games mainly on special teams to earn a letter. He tallied seven tackles on special teams and recovered one fumble. He also caught one pass for four yards. Fuller was named to the Dean’s List in Fall 2011 and Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in Fall 2011. He was listed as Baylor’s No. 2 at inside receiver on their post spring depth chart.

This is my 8th season (2005-present) working as the stadium operations guy here with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. I will be reminiscing the best performances by the Kernels during my tenure to add to my This Date in Kernels Alumni History
