This date in Kernels history – August 25, 2009 – Will Smith
On August 25, 2009 Will Smith worked six innings while allowing one run as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Clinton Lumberkings 8-1. Smith struck out six without issuing a walk and allowed four hits and one run to earn the victory.
Will Smith posted a 10-5 record with a 3.76 E.R.A in 19 starts for the 2009 Cedar Rapids Kernels. He struck out 95 batters in 115 innings of work. The 2009 Kernels squad finished with a 78-60 record under manager Bill Mosiello defeating the Peoria Chiefs in the opening round of the playoffs before losing in the semifinals to the Burlington Bees.
Will Smith was acquired by the Kansas City Royals along with Sean O’Sullivan (2007) in exchange for Alberto Callaspo (2003) on July 22, 2010. Smith made his major league debut on May 23, 2012 at Yankee Stadium. He has posted a 4-5 record with a 5.40 E.R.A. in ten starts for the Royals. Smith had compiled a 4-4 mark with a 3.61 E.R.A. in 15 starts for the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA) before his promotion.
