This date in Kernels history – September 14, 2009 – Will Smith
On September 14, 2009 Will Smith pitched eight innings while allowing two runs as the Cedar Rapids Kernels fell to the Burlington Bees 2-1 in the deciding game of the best-of-three semifinals of the Midwest League Playoffs. Smith struck out nine batters while walking five and allowed three hits in the loss.
The 2009 season was the closest the Cedar Rapids Kernels have made it to the championship series during my eight years as our Stadium Operations manager. September 14 is the latest date into the year Cedar Rapids has played a game during my time here, thus this will be the final “This Date in Kernels History” post of the season. I will be continuing to add “This Date in Cedar Rapids Professional Baseball History” posts as I dig through old Cedar Rapids Gazette archives.
Will Smith posted a 10-5 record with a 3.76 E.R.A in 19 starts for the 2009 Cedar Rapids Kernels. He struck out 95 batters in 115 innings of work. The 2009 Kernels squad finished with a 78-60 record under manager Bill Mosiello defeating the Peoria Chiefs in the opening round of the playoffs before losing in the semifinals to the Burlington Bees.
Will Smith was acquired by the Kansas City Royals along with Sean O’Sullivan (2007) in exchange for Alberto Callaspo (2003) on July 22, 2010. Smith made his major league debut on May 23, 2012 at Yankee Stadium. He has posted a 5-7 record with a 4.94 E.R.A. in 13 starts for the Royals. Smith had compiled a 4-4 mark with a 3.61 E.R.A. in 15 starts for the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA) before his promotion.
This was my 8th season (2005-present) working as the stadium operations guy here with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. I will be reminiscing the best performances by the Kernels during my tenure to add to my This Date in Kernels Alumni History features this year.
