This date in Kernels alumni history – December 9, 1981 – Larry Herndon acquired by the Detroit Tigers
On December 9. 1981, the Detroit Tigers traded pitcher Dan Schatzeder and minor leaguer Mike Chris to the San Francisco Giants to acquire Larry Herndon (Cedar Rapids Cardinals – 1972). Herndon hit .292 with 23 HR and 88 RBI in his first season with the Tigers. He followed that up with a career best season in 1983 hitting .302 with 20 HR and 92 RBI. Herndon and the 1984 Tigers went on to win the World Series where he hit .333 with a HR and 3 RBI as the Tigers defeated the Padres in five games.
Larry Herndon hit .274 with 107 HR and 550 RBI during his 14 year MLB career playing for the Cardinals, Giants and Tigers. Herndon has served as a coach for the Lakeland Flying Tigers over the past few years.
Larry Herndon played briefly for the 1972 Cedar Rapids Cardinals team that finished with a mark of 51-77 under manager Gary Geiger. Herndon hit .286 in seven games.
