This date in Kernels history – September 9, 2009 – Gabe Jacobo

On September 9, 2009, Gabe Jacobo went 2-5 at the plate with a HR, a RBI and scored a run as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Peoria Chiefs 6-4, in 10 innings, in game one of the best-of-three series during the opening round of the Midwest League playoffs.

Gabe Jacobo hit .320 with 12 doubles, 3 HR and 24 RBI in 34 games for Cedar Rapids in 2008. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 72-66 record under manager Keith Johnson. The Kernels topped Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs before falling to Burlington in the semifinals. Jacobo returned in 2009 to hit .257 with 27 doubles, 9 triples, 10 HR and 72 RBI in 118 games. The 2009 squad finished the season with a 78-60 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels topped Peoria in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs before falling to Burlington in the semifinals.

Gabe Jacobo hit .270 with 13 doubles, 10 HR and 49 RBI in 86 games for the Arkansas Travelers in 2011. The Blue Jays selected Gabe Jacobo in the Triple-A phase of the Rule V draft this past off-season. Jacobo started the 2012 season with the Dunedin Blue Jays where he hit .338 with 14 doubles, 6 HR and 27 RBI in 31 games before earning a promotion to New Hampshire (AA). He has hit .330 with eight doubles, two HR and nine RBI in 25 games for the Fisher Cats.

This is my 8th season (2005-present) working as the stadium operations guy here with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. I will be reminiscing the best performances by the Kernels during my tenure to add to my This Date in Kernels Alumni History features this year.

This date in Kernels history – July 3, 2006 – Stephen Marek

On July 3, 2006, Stephen Marek led the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 7-1 victory over the Burlington Bees. Marek worked eight innings striking out two batters while allowing one run on four hits to earn the win.

Stephen Marek posted a 10-2 record and a 1.96 E.R.A. in 19 starts for Cedar Rapids in 2006. Marek struck out 100 batters in 119 1/3 innings of work and was selected to the mid-season Midwest League All-Star squad. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 65-74 record under manager Bobby Magallanes.

Stephen Marek was acquired by the Atlanta Braves along with Casey Kotchman (2002) on July 29, 2008 in exchange for Mark Teixeira. Marek posted a 0-1 record with two saves and a 3.38 E.R.A. in 10 games for the Gwinnett Braves (AAA) in 2011 striking out 16 batters in 10 2/3 innings of work.

Stephen Marek posted a 1-0 record with a 3.60 E.R.A. in seven games for the Dunedin Blue Jays (Hi-A) before being promoted to New Hampshire (AA) in 2012. Marek has a 1-0 record with a 9.64 E.R.A. in four games for the Fisher Cats since the promotion.
