8 Cedar Rapids Kernels Alumni make MLB debut, 35 total MLB active players in 2012

There were eight Cedar Rapids Kernels alumni who made their MLB debut in 2012. Barret Browning, David Carpenter, Patrick Corbin, Miguel Gonzalez, Jean Segura, Tyler Skaggs, Will Smith and Andrew Taylor were among the 35 Kernels alumni who played in a MLB game in 2012. The number is down slightly from the 39 former alumni who played in a MLB game in 2011.

2012 was the fifth time there has been three Cedar Rapids professional baseball alumni players selected to the same All-Star game (2012, 2007, 1991, 1984 and 1966). Mike Napoli (2001-02), Mike trout (2009-10) and Mark Trumbo (2006-07) each made their first all-star teams. We have never had more than three appear in the same season. Here is the link to our full all-star selection list.

This date in Kernels history – July 18, 2010 – Kernels’ biggest rally I have seen.

On July 18, 2010, the Cedar Rapids Kernels sent 20 batters to the plate and scored a team-record 14 runs in the seventh inning en route to an 18-11 win over the Lake County Captains at Perfect Game Field. The Kernels also set season game highs in runs scored, hits (21) and RBI (16).

Lake County jumped on Kernels starter Stephen Locke for nine runs in the first five innings, including home runs by Chris Kersten and Adam Abraham. The Kernels cut the lead to 9-2 on a two run homer by Michael Wing, his third of the season. The Captains increased the lead to 11-2 as Abraham hit his second HR of the game off Manaurys Correa and the Kernels made it 11-3 as Richard Cates hit a sac fly.

The Kernels then launched into the seventh inning, batting for 50 minutes, as 20 players went to the plate. The Kernels hit for the cycle in the inning as Jean Segura and Justin Bass tripled, Matt Long and Casey Haerther doubled, and Jon Karcich capped the inning with a solo home run to put the Kernels ahead 12-11.

Segura finished the game 3-6 with two triples and 2 RBI; Justin Bass was 3-5 with a triple and 3 RBI; and Richard Cates was 1-3 with 3 RBI. Kernels reliever David Carpenter (2-3) picked up the win with two innings of relief and Johnny Hellweg worked a scoreless ninth.

Jeremy Cruz was 2-5 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored in the Kernels 18-11 win over Lake County.

I remember hanging out above the bleacher sections with my brother and his band who were going to play post game as part of our Faith Day at the ballpark. We kept joking that we only needed 8 more runs and then 7 and so forth and they just kept hitting until they took the lead and buried the opponent.

Cedar Rapids finished the 2010 season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.
