This date in Kernels history – July 12, 2010 – Stephen Locke No-Hitter

On July 12, 2010, Stephen Locke pitched the 12th Cedar Rapids no-hitter since joining the Midwest League in 1962. Locke worked five shutout innings striking out two while only allowing one walk in the rain shortened game as the Kernels defeated the Peoria Chiefs 10-0. It was the second Kernels no-hitter of the 2010 season. Fabio Martinez, Kyle Hurst and Mike Kenney combined to no-hit the Kane County Cougars on April 30, 2010. Cedar Rapids had never had a pair of no-hitters thrown in the same season.

Stephen Locke posted a 8-7 record with a 4.37 E.R.A. in 19 games for Cedar Rapids in 2010. Locke struck out 77 batters in 117 1/3 innings of work. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.

Stephen Locke posted a 0-1 record with a 10.57 E.R.A. in 2 starts for Inland Empire (Hi-A) in 2011.

This date in Kernels history – July 2, 2007 – Jeremy Haynes

On July 2, 2007, Jeremy haynes pitched seven shutout innings to earn the win as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Kane County Cougars 5-0. Haynes struck out two while allowing four hits in the game.

Jeremy Haynes went 5-6 with a 3.06 E.R.A. in 19 starts for Cedar Rapids in 2007. Haynes struck out 75 batters in 94 innings of work. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 78-61 record under manager Ever Magallanes. The Kernels lost to the Clinton Lumberkings in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs. Jeremy Haynes also appeared in 5 games for the Kernels in 2008 posting a 2-1 record with a 2.67 E.R.A.

Jeremy Haynes split the 2011 season between the Inland Empire 66ers (Hi-A – LAA) and the Lynchburg Hillcats (Hi-A – ATL). Haynes had a 1-2 record with a 9.39 E.R.A. in four games for Inland Empire and posted a 2-1 mark with a 6.41 E.R.A. in 30 games for Lynchburg in 2011. The Atlanta Braves released Haynes during Spring Training this year.

This date in Kernels history – June 16, 2009 – Roberto Lopez

On June 16, 2009, Roberto Lopez hit a walk off HR in the bottom of the 14th inning to help the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeat the Kane County Cougars 7-6 in extra innings at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Roberto Lopez hit .271 with 18 doubles, 11 HR and 67 RBI in 94 games for the 2009 Kernels squad. The Kernels finished with a 78-60 record under manager Bill Mosiello defeating the Peoria Chiefs in the opening round of the playoffs before losing in the semifinals to the Burlington Bees.

Roberto Lopez hit .266 with 31 doubles, 12 HR and 32 RBI between Arkansas (AA) and Salt Lake (AAA) in 2011. Lopez has started the 2012 season playing for the Arkansas Travelers.

This date in Kernels history – June 15, 2009 – Will Smith

On June 15, 2009 Will Smith worked eight innings while allowing one run as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Kane Count Cougars 6-1. Smith struck out seven while walking two and allowing five hits to earn the victory.

Will Smith posted a 10-5 record with a 3.76 E.R.A in 19 starts for the 2009 Cedar Rapids Kernels. He struck out 95 batters in 115 innings of work. The 2009 Kernels squad finished with a 78-60 record under manager Bill Mosiello defeating the Peoria Chiefs in the opening round of the playoffs before losing in the semifinals to the Burlington Bees.

Will Smith was acquired by the Kansas City Royals along with Sean O’Sullivan (2007) in exchange for Alberto Callaspo (2003) on July 22, 2010. Smith made his major league debut on May 23, 2012 at Yankee Stadium. He posted a 1-2 record with a 9.00 E.R.A. in three starts for the Royals. Smith has compiled a 1-3 mark with a 4.42 E.R.A. in 10 starts for the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA) this season.

This date in Kernels history – June 13, 2008 – Trevor Reckling

On June 13, 2008, Trevor Reckling struck out four batters in eight shutout innings of work while allowing three hits and a pair of walks  as the Kernels defeated the Kane County Cougars 2-0.

Trevor Reckling posted a 10-7 record with a 3.37 E.R.A. with one complete game in 26 starts for Cedar Rapids in 2008. Reckling struck out 128 batters in 152 1/3 innings of work and was selected to play in the Midwest League All-Star game. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 72-66 record under manager Keith Johnson. The Kernels topped Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs before falling to Burlington in the semifinals.

Trevor Reckling was selected to play in the 2009 Futures Game for Team USA. Reckling posted a 4-7 record with a 3.73 E.R.A. for the Arkansas Travelers (AA) in 2011 striking out 63 batters in 99 innings of work. He appeared in 4 games for Inland Empire (Hi-A) before being released by the Angels this year.

This date in Kernels history – April 30, 2010 – Fabio Martinez, Kyle Hurst and Mike Kenney No-Hitter

On April 30, 2010, Fabio Martinez, Kyle Hurst and Mike Kenney teamed up to pitch a combined no-hitter to defeat the Kane County Cougars 3-0 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. It was the first Kernels no-hitter at New Veterans Memorial Stadium (2002-present). The most recent Cedar Rapids no-hitter had been Ramon Ortiz’s gem in 1997.

Fabio Martinez posted a 7-3 record and a 3.92 E.R.A. in 19 starts for Cedar Rapids in 2010. Martinez struck out 141 batters in 103 1/3 innings of work. He made the 2010 Midwest League All-Star squad and was leading the league in strikeouts before an injury cut short his 2010 season. Fabio Martinez was limited to two appearances in the Arizona League during the 2011 season. Martinez is starting the 2012 season at Inland Empire (High A).

Kyle Hurst went 1-2 with a 4.64 E.R.A. in 2009 before returning in 2010 to post a 4-2 record with a 2.84 E.R.A. for the 2010 Kernels squad. Hurst compiled a 8-5 mart with a 5.08 E.R.A. in 20 appearances between Inland Empire (Hi-A) and Arkansas (AA) in 2011.

Mike Kenney was 4-3 with a 3.51 E.R.A. for Cedar Rapids in 2010. He was selected to appear in the 2010 Midwest League All-Star game. Kenney posted a 5-6 mark with a 5.07 E.R.A. in 43 games for the Inland Empire 66ers in 2011.

Cedar Rapids finished the 2010 season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.
