This date in Kernels history – August 5, 2006 – Darren O’Day

On August 5, 2006, Darren O’Day struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn the win as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 4-3. O’Day posted a 3-1 mark with a 2.70 E.R.A. in 23 1/2 innings of work over 17 appearances.The Cedar Rapids Kernels squad that finished 65-74 under manager Bobby Magallanes in 2006.

The Orioles claimed righty reliever Darren O’Day (Cedar Rapids Kernels – 2006) off waivers from the Rangers last fall. O’Day, 29, had battled through injuries and posted a 0-1 record with a 5.40 E.R.A. in 2011. He joined the Rangers via an April 2009 waiver claim from the Mets. From that point through the end of the 2010 season, O’Day provided the Rangers a 1.99 ERA, 7.6 K/9, 2.2 BB/9, and 0.61 HR/9 in 117 2/3 innings. He made an appearance in four of the 2010 World Series games.

Darren O’Day is 5-0 with a 2.68 E.R.A. in 45 games out of the Orioles bullpen in 2012. O’Day has struck out 43 batters in 43 2/3 innings of work.

This date in Kernels history – April 28, 2007 – Mark Trumbo

On April 28, 2007,  Mark Trumbo went 4-5 at the plate with two RBI and scored a run as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 9-3. Mark Trumbo hit .272 with 27 doubles, 14 HR and 76 RBI in 128 games during the 2007 season for the Kernels. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 78-61 record under manager Ever Magallanes. The Kernels lost to the Clinton Lumberkings in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs. Trumbo hit .220 with 13 HR and 59 RBI for the 2006 Kernels squad which finished 65-74 under manager Bobby Magallanes.

Mark Trumbo finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting to Jeremy Hellickson of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011. Trumbo collected five first place votes and finished with 63 points compared to Hellickson’s 17 first place votes and 102 points. Trumbo led the Angels in HR and RBI. He finished the year hitting .254 with 29 HR and 87 RBI.

This date in Kernels history – April 27, 2007 – David Herndon

On April 27, 2007, David Herndon pitched a complete game working seven innings while allowing three runs (one earned) to earn the win as the Kernels defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 4-3. Herndon struck out four while allowing eight hits and a pair of walks in the victory in game one of a doubleheader sweep.

David Herndon posted a 13-8 record with a 4.02 E.R.A. with two complete games in 25 appearances for Cedar Rapids in 2007. Herndon struck out 83 batters in 152 1/3 innings of work. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 78-61 record under manager Ever Magallanes. The Kernels lost to the Clinton Lumberkings in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.

The Philadelphia Phillies selected David Herndon in the Rule V draft prior to the 2010 season. Herndon made his MLB debut with the Texas Rangers on April 4, 2010. He has compiled a 2-8 record with a 3.76 E.R.A. in 96 appearances out of the Phillies bullpen over the past two plus seasons including a 0-1 mark with a 3.18 E.R.A. thus far in 2012.
