This date in Kernels history – May 18, 2009 – Michael Kohn

On May 18, 2009, Michael Kohn struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning of work to earn his second save of the season as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Burlington Bees 3-2.

Michael Kohn posted a 4-1 record with six saves and a 2.19 E.R.A. in 28 games for Cedar Rapids in 2009. Kohn struck out 60 batters in 37 innings of work and was selected to the mid-season Midwest League All-Star squad. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 72-66 record under manager Keith Johnson. The Kernels topped Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs before falling to Burlington in the semifinals.

Michael Kohn made his MLB debut on July 26, 2010 for the Angels. Kohn posted a 2-0 record with one save and a 2.11 E.R.A. in 24 games for the Angels in 2010 striking out 20 batters in 21 1/3 innings of work. He was 0-1 with a save and a 7.30 E.R.A. in 2011. Kohn is out for the 2012 season after Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery.

This is my 8th season (2005-present) working as the stadium operations guy here with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. I will be reminiscing the best performances by the Kernels during my tenure to add to my This Date in Kernels Alumni History features this year.

     Jordan Walden (2008) struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning to earn
his 1st save of the season in the Angels 5-3 win over the Rays. Michael
Kohn (2009) allowed a solo HR working the eighth inning.

     Hank Conger (2007) was 1-4 with a solo HR, Howard Kendrick (2004)
went 2-2 with a triple two walks and scored two runs, Alberto Callaspo
(2003) was 1-4 with two RBI, Peter Bourjos (2007) went 1-4 with his 1st
stolen base of the year and Mark Trumbo (2006-07) was 0-4 in the
victory.

     Sean Rodriguez (2004-05) went 1-3 with a solo HR and a walk in the
Rays 5-3 loss to the Angels. Joel Peralta (2001-02) worked a scoreless
ninth in the game.

     Alexi Casilla (2004-05) went 0-2 in the Twins 5-4 extra inning win over the Yankees.

     Bobby Jenks (2001) struck out three batters in a scoreless 7th innings in the Red Sox 3-1 loss to the Indians.

     David Herndon (2007) struck out one while allowing a run in the sixth inning of the Phillies 7-1 loss to the Mets.

posted a 4-6 mark with a 2.18 ERA during the first half of the 2008
season for the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Walden struck out 91 batters in 107
1/3 innings of work before being promoted to Rancho Cucamonga
mid-season.

     Jordan Walden made his MLB debut on
August 22, 2010. Walden posted a 0-1 record with a 2.35 ERA and earned a
save working 15 1/3 innings of relief work for the Los Angeles Angels
of Anaheim last season.

     Howard Kendrick (2004) went 1-4 with a solo HR as the Angels lost 2-1 to the Royals. Erick Aybar (2003) was 2-4 with a stolen base, Alberto Callaspo (2003) was 1-3, Mark Trumbo (2006-07) went 1-3, Peter Bourjos (2007) was 1-3 and Jeff Mathis (2002) went 0-3 in the loss.


     Jordan Walden (2008) struck out 2 batters in a scoreless 8th inning. Michael Kohn (2009) allowed a leadoff HR in the bottom of the 9th to take the loss.

     Mike Napoli (2001-02) got the start at firstbase and went 2-3 with a HR, 3 RBI and scored 2 runs in his Rangers debut as they defeated the Red Sox 9-5.

     Alexi Casilla (2004-05) went 1-3 with a RBI double as the Twins fell 13-3 to the Blue Jays.

     David Herndon (2007) allowed 2 runs in an innings of work as the Phillies defeated the Astros 5-4.

Mike Napoli (2001-02), David Murphy Heroes as Rangers win opener, 9-5 – DallasNews.com

napoli26 cropb.jpg     Mike Napoli (2001-02) homered in his Rangers debut on Friday. He was a member of the 2001 and 2002 Cedar Rapids Kernels
teams. In 2001, the Kernels finished 60-77 under manager Tyrone Boykin.
Napoli hit .232 with 5 HR and 18 RBI in 43 games for Cedar Rapids. In
2002, the Kernels posted a 81-58 mark under manager Todd Claus. The 2002
Kernels defeated Quad Cities before losing to Peoria in the semifinals
of the Midwest League Playoffs. Napoli hit .251 with 10 HR, 19 doubles
and had 50 RBI in 103 games for Cedar Rapids in 2002.

     Mike
Napoli enters the 2011 season with a career .251 batting average, 92 HR
and 249 RBI in five seasons playing for the Los Angeles Angels of
Anaheim

delay, Your Harvester Links for 4/1/11:

     Jeff Mathis (2002) celebrated his 28th birthday hitting the first Kernels alumni HR of the 2011 season to help lead the Angels to a 4-2 win over Kansas City. Mathis was 2-4, Peter Bourjos (2007) went 2-4 with a run scored, Erick Aybar (2003) was 1-4 with a RBI double, Howard Kendrick (2004) went 1-4 with a double and Mark Trumbo (2006-07) was 0-4 in the Angels opener.

     Jordan Walden (2008) closed out the 7th inning with a strike out for his 1st hold of the season. Kevin Jepsen (2003-04) and Michael Kohn (2009) split up 8th inning duties for their 1st holds of the season as well in the win.

mathis smaller.jpg     Jeff Mathis (2002) was a member of the 2002 Cedar Rapids Kernels team that
finished the regular season with a 81-58 mark before losing to Peoria in
the semi-finals of the Midwest League Playoffs. Mathis hit .287 with 41
doubles, 10 HR and 73 RBI in 128 games for Cedar Rapids.

     Jeff Mathis entered the 2011 season with a .199 batting average, 23 HR
and 117 RBI during his 6 seasons with the Angels. Mathis hit .534 during
the 2009 post season with five doubles in seven games. He drove in the
game-winning run with a walk-off double in the 11th inning of game 3 of
the LCS.
